Transport Workers Clash In Sango

Four persons were feared killed this morning at Sango Motor Park, Ogun State when members of rival factions in the Naational Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, clashed.

More than six members of the union were severely injured during the clash.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the NURTW members were fighting for control of the motor parks under the bridge at Sango.

The fighting disrupted movement of vehicles on the ever-busy Abeokuta-Lagos expressway and many vehicles had to look for alternative routes to get to their destinations.

Commuters and traders ran for safety as supporters of the former Chairman of NURTW in  Ogun State, Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa resisted attempt by supporters of the new chairman of the union to take over the park from them.

Dangerous weapons like cudgels, cutlass, guns, broken bottles and others were used to destroy many vehicles by the combatants.

Investigations revealed further that policemen from Sango Station had a hectic time dislodging the NURTW members from the area.

The fighting left many commuters coming to work in Lagos stranded for several hours with no buses to take them to their destination.

The fighting NURTW members sporadically fired into the air to scare commuters and residents who hide in houses and stalls to prevent themselves being hit by stray bullets.

Before today’s clash, the National President of the union, Alhaji Yasin had invited members of the union in the state to the national headquarters of the union in Abuja where the chairmanship tussle was settled with the pronouncement of Alhaji Akeem Adeosun, a.k.a. Jango as the chairman of the union in the state.

Fierce looking mobile policemen drafted to the scene to dislodge the fighter were seen in the area maintaining the peace as at the time of filing this report.
