Woman Estate Agent Jailed 1 Month

An Abuja Senior Magistrates’ Court yesterday, sentenced a 27-year old woman, Amaka Odoh, to one month imprisonment for cheating.

Senior Magistrate Hauwa Aliyu, who convicted the accused, however, gave her an option of fine of N10,000 in place of imprisonment.

The accused was also ordered to repay N60,000 to the complainant before 14 December, 2011, failure which she would serve three months in prison.

Odoh was arraigned before the court for deceitfully collecting N100,000 from one Stella Nwazoma on the pretence of helping her to secure accommodation.

She pleaded guilty to the charge. The Police prosecutor, Corporal Emeka Oganah, had alleged that Odoh committed the offence on 9 August, 2011.

Oganah told the court that the convict deceitfully collected N100,000 from the complainant on pretext to pay for an apartment for her at Gwarimpa, Abuja.

The prosecutor said that the convict refused to look for the apartment, but instead, converted the money to her personal use.

He said that during Police investigation, N40,000 was recovered from her.

The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravened Section 322 of the Penal Code Law.
