PAC Calls on FG to Reconsider Proposal To Restore Toll Gates

The Progressive Action Congress (PAC) on Friday called on the Federal Government to reconsider the proposed rebuilding of toll gates across the country.

The Chairman of the Party, Chief Charles Nwodo, made the call in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Nwodo said the reintroduction of the toll gates was “a mark of our policy inconsistency.”

He said the amount of money spent on toll gates for both the construction and pulling down of the structures and the payment of the contractors were enough to empower the teeming unemployed youths.

“The new conception of same toll gates must be weighed along with the cost benefit effect and not just a matter of contract awards that will not see the light of the day.

“The intention must not be centred on exploitation, but a means of creating safety standards on our roads and also guarantee the smooth maintenance of the highways for the benefit of the users,” Nwodo said.

According to him, the construction must be reasonable with new technologies and emergency outfits that will match global standards.

He said that it would also assist the Federal Road Safety Marshals in the implementation of their daily routine responsibilities.

He advised that “the speed control systems should also be constructed along the highways, hence the toll gates will serve as checking points for the defaulters who wish to evade the law,” he added.
