‘Alex Ibru Was A Pro-Democracy Activist’
Senate Minority Whip, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, GOS, has said that with the death of The Guardian newspapers publisher, Dr. Alex Ibru, Nigeria has lost one of its pro-democracy activists who fought for the enthronement of democracy in the country.
GOS, as he his fondly called, said this while reacting to the death of the publisher, adding that he contributed in no small measure to the enthronement of democracy in the country.
“He was one of Nigeria’s pro-democracy activists. He demonstrated, through the Guardian newspaper, his commitment to the enthronement and development of democracy in the country and he will be missed by the country. His death is not only a loss to the journalism profession and his family but also to the country at large,†he said.
Going back memory lane, the senator representing Lagos West Senatorial District, stated that it was because of the belief and commitment of Ibru to the enthronement of democracy that The Guardian newspaper had problems with the military and it was closed down severally during the military era.
The old Mushin Local Government ex-chairman while condoling with members of the late publisher’s family, stated that he had indeed left his footprints in the sands of time.
“He brought development to journalism, made The Guardian newspaper a reference point and contributed positively to the enthronement of democracy in the country through his newspaper’s stance to remain with the people. We will all miss him.â€
“I remember that The Guardian newspaper was closed down by successive military juntas because of its critical stance against military rule.â€
“The man was nearly killed by agents of the state during the late Abacha era just because of his belief in the enthronement of democracy in the country which he expressed personally and through The Guardian newspaper. The man deserves to be celebrated,†said GOS.
