Sergeant Rapes 24-Year Old

Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi, Mr. Adeola Adeniji, has confirmed the arrest of police Sergeant, who allegedly raped a 24 year-old girl.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspect, a son of a senior police officer, was attached to the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB), Government House, Ebonyi.

Adeniji told newsmen in Abakaliki on Friday that the incident took place at the Command Headquarters, Abakaliki on November 15.

He said that the rape victim was a native of Noyo Alike, in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi.

“The State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is presently investigating the incident, as both the accused and victim have been subjected to medical examinations to determine the direction of further police action,“ he said.

The commissioner remarked that the command would write the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), on the matter and gave an assurance that investigations into the matter would be carried out without any sentiment.

“The accused will first be subjected to Orderly Room trial and if medical examination confirms the rape, he will be dismissed before being arraigned for the alleged offence.

“This command will no longer tolerate any act of indiscipline among its officers and I will not hesitate to recommend the dismissal of any officer found guilty of such an unethical act,“ he said.

The commissioner also confirmed the arrest of a 50 year-old man from Amachi Development Centre in Abakaliki Local Government Area for allegedly defiling an eight-year-old girl.

“The man who is now on bail, allegedly drank some chemical substances in an attempt to commit suicide rather than being arraigned in court for the alleged offence,“ he said.
