NSCDC Worker Docked; Over N1.8m Fraud

A member of staff of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Amadi Darlington, was on Monday arraigned for dishonestly receiving N1.8 million to provide employment.

The accused, standing trial in an Abuja Chief Magistrate’s Court, is a resident of Federal Housing, Lugbe, FCT.

The prosecutor, Mr Chegozie Okezie (SP), told the court that sometime in November, Mrs Joy Orji, wrote a petition, urging the police to investigate the accused.

He said the investigation revealed that sometime between March and April, the accused received N1.8 million from Orji for the purpose of employing some people in the Nigerian Customs.

Okezie said that since then, the accused had neither facilitated the employment nor refunded Orji’s money.

The accused pleaded not guilty.

Following his plea, Okezie urged the court to detain the accused as the police had not completed investigation in the case.

He said the accused claimed to have given the money to two other people, who were now at large, and as such, the police would need the suspect’s assistance to arrest them.

Okezie said the accused was charged with “public servant dishonestly receiving money or property not due, which contravenes Section 122 of the Penal Code.”

The Magistrate, Mr Azubike Okeagu, remanded the accused in prison custody and adjourned the case to December 22.
