Senate Commended Over Law Against Homosexual Marriage
The National Secretary, National Conscience Party, NCP, Dr Yunusa Tanko, on Wednesday applauded the Senate for the passage of the bill prohibiting same sex marriage contract or civil union in the country.
Tanko told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)in Abuja in a telephone interview that the issue was obnoxious to the Nigerian culture.
Tanko said: “If such behaviour could be termed as wrong by the creator who created us then it is alright for us to abolish it in its entirety.’’
He said that Western countries that sought to use the issue as leverage to give aid to Nigeria should understand that it was Nigeria’s internal law and should not be biased toward us over it.
“The law prohibiting gay marriage is our own internal law and we expect any other country to understand that this is Nigeria and what is peculiar to our expectations, our needs and culture is what is referred to as law.
“As far as we are concerned, gay marriage will not help us, so it is something that we decide and no country should feel offended by our own law, they should even emulate usâ€, he opined.
Tanko, however, said that the 14-year jail term was appropriate and “a welcome development which will help the society to correct some of its flaws and Nigeria will move on.â€
The Senate on Tuesday passed into law, a bill prohibiting same sex marriage and other such unions.
