Fashola Commissions 1.3m Mini Water Works
Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday commissioned the Alausa Mini-Water Works that will deliver 1.3 million gallons of water per day to the Alausa community and its environs.
Commissioning the mini-water works in Alausa, Ikeja, southwest Nigeria, Fashola said the state government had already delivered 15 mini-water works to residents of Lagos in the last four years, adding that more were still in the pipeline.
Fashola, who was represented by the Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello said with the provision of the mini-water works, incidents of residents constructing boreholes should be over as the water works would be able to serve the entire Alausa area.
The commissioner said that proliferation of boreholes had the danger of undermining the underground water of Lagos State and appealed to residents to desist from constructing more boreholes and hook up to the water supplied by the water corporation.
He stated that the government had invested huge resources in the provision of water for Lagosians, adding that the government was capable of delivering the 750 million gallons of water per day to residents of Lagos by 2020.
“We will continue to meet our campaign promises. We believe that after the completion of the Odomola Water Scheme and the Adiyan Phase II water scheme, more Lagosians would benefit from the water schemes.
Group Managing Director, GMD, Lagos Water Corporation, Engr. Shayo Holloway said the Alausa Mini-Water Works was the first of the four World Bank Mini-Water works project to be delivered in partnership with the Lagos State government.
He said that the other three mini-water works were still being constructed at Isheri-Oke, Alexandria and Apongbon.
According to him, the Alausa Mini-Water Works comprised two mini-water projects, explaining that the first one was a rehabilitated facility expected to deliver 300,000 gallons of water per day while the second water project would deliver one million gallons of water per day, giving an overall total of 1.3 million gallons of water per day to be delivered to the Alausa community.
“The 300,000 gallons of water refurbished waterworks has two boreholes, one in use and the other on standby. The one million gallons of water mini-waterworks has four boreholes, three in operation and the other on standby.
