UNILAG Marks World AIDS Day

There was a massive turnout in the University of Lagos as students and staff celebrate this year’s World AIDS Day.

The theme of the event Getting To Zero, is an innovation to eradicate HIV/AIDS among students on campus.

According to the immediate past academic vice chancellor, Professor Modupe Ogunlesi, while addressing the students of International School, “HIV/AIDS is a deadly disease. There are various ways in contacting HIV/AIDS, be it through sharp objects, sharing of tooth brush, unprotected sex, but the best of a student is to abstain from sex.”

Also speaking at the event, the Director of Medical Services, Ramota Adebola Apampa, urged the students to spread the message and not the virus, because, in the course of spreading the virus, one could harm him/herself the more.

Apampa further stressed that everyone should know his or her HIV/AIDS status and not discriminate against people living with the disease.

Professor Mofelola Omoegun of the Counseling Unit of the institution also pleaded to the students to be free to approach the unit for any advice on any aspect of their lives.

In an interview with Campus Square, the president of Anti- AIDS Club, University of Lagos, Olasupo Vera-Cruz, said “it’s time for everybody to walk towards free HIV/AIDS world generation which should begin with us.”

The institution’s Rotaract Club, Anti-AIDS Club and Medical Services Unit were part of the bodies that made the event a success.
