My Wife Is A Thief, Imam Tells Court

The Imam of Gbigbadura Central Mosque, Matogun, Ogun State,  Alhaji Addul Quadri Hassan has filed a divorce suit against his estranged wife, Mrs. Mariam Idowu Bello, before the Agege Grade ‘A’ customary court in Lagos on the allegation that his wife is a thief and lies a a lot.

According to Hassan they have been separated since 2005 and  have two children who live with their mother who is married to another man.

He said he called his ex-wife a thief because the first time he brought her to his house to start living as husband and wife she stole a piece of meat from the pot and he has kept it secret because of the love he had for her then.

Responding to the allegations Mrs. Mariam Bello said she does not want to leave her children to the plaintiff because since she had left his house, he has not been taking care of the children.

She also added that her husband beat her any time they had a disagreement. She said the last time he beat her was when she went to his house to pick up one of her children in 2009 because he had taken away the child from her.

When the court president, Mr. Emmanuel Shokunle asked Hassan how much he pays for the children school fees, he said he has no money to pay to anybody.

He advised the estranged couple to give peace a chance. The matter has been adjourned till 7 February 2012 for judgment.
