Subsidy Removal: Police Beef Up Security
The Police Command in Cross River says it has beefed up security around government establishments within Calabar metropolis and major streets of the town.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Samson Wudah, said on Wednesday that the measure became imperative to forestall any attempt by miscreants to hijack the planned protest by the NLC and TUC over the removal of fuel subsidy announced by the Federal Government on January 1, 2012.
Wudah disclosed this when he met with the Divisional Police Officers and stakeholders in security management in Calabar.
He said that the police have strategised to prevent any breakdown of peace and order in the state.
Wudah further said that the police had increased patrol, especially in suspected flash points and government establishments.
He said that the police had also put in place other proactive measures so as to not be taken unawares.
The commissioner also revealed that crime rate in the state had reduced in the past one year.
According to him, more than 80 people suspected to be cultists are facing prosecution in various courts in the state.
