Agege Abattoir Stinks, Lawmaker Cries Out
A Lagos lawmaker, Ibrahim Layode, has cried out over the poor environment under which business people at the abattoir and Lairage, Oko-Oba Agege, operate.
Layode instructed the management of the abattoir to embark on aggressive environmental sanitation to make the place friendly.
The Chairman, House Committee on Agriculture and Co-operative, who gave this instruction when he led his colleagues to the abattoir recently, said: “I must confess to you that I’m not happy about the situation of the abattoir.
“There is need for the Ministry of Environment to also visit the abattoir and assess the environmental impact of the whole place.”
Layode observed that the filthy environment, especially the entrance of the abattoir, the slab and the canal, needs to be tidied as government would not allow an abattoir where it spend so much money on to be so dirty.
The lawmaker also warned people who use motorcycles to transport meat to desist henceforth as the action contravenes existing environmental laws on the carrying of dairy products in the abattoir.
He urged relevant government agencies to ensure strict enforcement of the laws.
The committee chairman implored the management and different associations in the area to co-operate, saying that the government would continue to give them necessary support as long as they abide with the laws of the state.
