Lagos Dep. Gov. Worry Over Strike
The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, on Sunday expressed worry that the lingering strike by the organised labour over the fuel subsidy removal was stalling Nigeria’s economic growth.
Responding to questions from journalists in Lagos during the wreath-laying ceremony at this year‘s Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration, she said the strike’s continuation should be discouraged.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ceremony took place at the Tafawa Balewa Square’s Arcade.
“I want Nigerians to pray over the conflict that trailed the January 1 removal of fuel subsidy, and I also call on the Federal Government and the organised labour to ensure a successful negotiation.
“This is because people who are supposed to be making their daily income are sitting at home, while the country is losing revenue and public properties are being destroyed,” the deputy governor said.
Speaking on the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, she said it was necessary to recognise Nigeria’s fallen heroes and respect them for their sacrifices.
Orelope-Adefulire said that such recognition would motivate serving soldiers to put in their best.
She commended the Nigerian armed forces for protecting the country’s territorial integrity.
NAN reports that the deputy governor inspected the guard of honour, set free pigeons and laid the wreaths as was the practice during every Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration.
The State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, was not at the event, but it was attended by the heads of military formations in Lagos State and many officials of the state government.
