N5m Fraud: Fake Woman Navy Captain Remanded

A 41-year-old pregnant fake woman Navy Captain, Chioma Bekky, has been arraigned in Igbosere magistrate’s court on a four-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence.

The Inspector General of Police Monitoring team which arraigned her in court alleged in the charge sheet that the accused was arrested following a complaint by Alhaji Kabiru Mohammed that the accused in August last year at a company in Apapa, Lagos, approached him and identified herself as a serving captain in the Nigerian Navy and was in a position to supply him two truckload of fertiliser, and in the process took N5,200,000 from her.

But she failed to supply the fertiliser and also refused to refund the money.

Following the report, the police arrested her and during interrogation, she allegedly confessed that she obtained the money from the complainant and promised to pay back.

When she failed to pay back the money as promised, she was charged to court for impersonation and stealing, offences which, according to the prosecutor, Inspector Nwosu, George are punishable under section 409, 312, 285 and 378 of the criminal laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

Count 4 of the charges read that you Chioma Bekky and others at large on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did falsely represent yourself to be a member of the Nigeria Navy to obtained N5,200,000 from Alhaji Kabiru Mohammed, a representation you knew to be false.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and the presiding magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Ogunsanya, granted her bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties who must be working in a reputable company with proof of six months bank account.

She adjourned the matter till 30 January, 2012.

The accused was taken to Kirikiri prison when she could not meet the bail conditions.
