2012 Olympics: No National Camp For Team Nigeria —Ekeji
As the London 2012 Olympics draws closer, Director General of the National Sports Commission, NSC, Patrick Ekeji, has revealed that there will be no national camp for Team Nigeria to prepare for world championships.
The NSC boss explained that the idea of camping the athletes in a single place in preparation for the Games is unrealistic now, saying that the bulk of the Nigerian athletes are based in Europe.
The former Nigerian international said the NSC reasoned that another means of camping the athletes for the Games should be arranged rather than a national camping.
“It is not possible to get our athletes together for a national camping. The reason is that the majority of our athletes are based in Europe. It will be very difficult to assemble them in one place with six months to the Olympics,” said Ekeji.
The NSC boss said each federation going to the Olympics would be mandated to organise its camping programme for its athletes rather than the commission organising a general one for Team Nigeria.
“What the commission will do this time is to fund individual federations which will organise their own camping programme for their athletes. We think the athletes will be able to have solid preparations with this arrangement,” he said.
