LASUBEB Urges Administrators To Be Responsive

The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) on Tuesday urged school administrators and management committees to be more proactive in their response to emergencies.

The Chairman of the board, Mrs. Gbolahan Daodu, made the call in Ikeja at the opening of a three-day workshop for school-based management committees in the state.

She said prompt responses to natural disasters and emergencies would help mitigate loss of lives and properties.

“The objective is to identify hazard-prone areas, determine the level of vulnerability of pupils to different types of hazards and to develop relevant skills to mitigate such hazards.

“It is also to enhance the ability of school administrators and management committees in effective performance of their roles,” Daodu said in a statement.

According to her, the state government, as part of its commitment to qualitative education, voted “huge sums of money” to the sector.

“The government is also collaborating with the various organs, agencies and institutions within and outside the shores of Nigeria to ensure the realisation of such goals,” the SUBEB chairman added.

Daodu also stressed the need for the protection of school infrastructure during disasters and emergencies.

Also speaking, an Education Specialist with UNICEF, Mrs .Justina Onifade, lauded the state government for creating structures that could help combat emergencies, but urged more funding for the education sector.

She assured of UNICEF’s preparedness to partner with the government to realise its goals.

The Leader of Education Sector Support Programme In Nigeria (ESSPIN), Dr. Gboyega Ilusanya, called for collaboration by stakeholders toward improving the quality of education in the state.
