Imo State Agog For Ihuoma Cup As Gov Okorocha Declares Tourney Open


This year’s edition of the Annual Imo State Majority Leader’s Football Championship, tagged ‘Ihuoma Unity Cup 2012’ will kick off on Saturday at Chioma Ajunwa Stadium, Ahiazu Mbaise, Imo State.

Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha and other invited sports personalities are expected to grace the opening ceremony.

This was made known by the publicist of the competition, Ukozor Victor Macdonald who stated that the tourney will feature only indigenes of Ahiazu Local Government Area of the state.

Macdonald said that 12 teams from the communities in the local council will take part in the three-week competition.

He disclosed that the cup donor, Adaku Ihuoma, has received the approval of his company, Ultimate Sports Promotions Limited, to kit the two teams that will play the opening match.

The Ultimate Sports CEO also disclosed that special awards of merit will be presented to two esteemed Imo State indigenes, the Heartland FC General-Manager, Chief Fan Ndubuoke, former nationl chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN and the four-time African Women Footballer of The Year, Perpetua Nkwocha.

”We have made arrangements to make the occasion a very memorable one, with a lot of side attractions and additional events to mark the day,” said Macdonald, who is also a FIFA-licensed players’ agent.

Aside the presentation of special merit awards on the opening day, individual awards will also been given out to outstanding players and coaches at the closing ceremony.

”These awards will be for best player, highest goal scorer, best goalkeeper, best coach, best behaved team, best referee and best media coverage,” Macdonald said.

He noted that a seven-member organising committee has also been inaugurated to ensure a smooth running of the competition.

“The organising committee is on ground to ensure proper organisation of the competition. We will all work together to package a memorable championship worthy of the noble image of Adaku Ihuoma and one that will put Imo State in the forefront of football development in this country,” Macdonald said.

The organising committee comprises Engineer Chinedu Otuechere, Chidi Adi, Barnabas Eze, Engineer Greg Anyanwu,Uchenna Iwuchukwu, Mrs. Julie Anyanwu and Mr. D. C. Anyanwu.
