Three persons, Friday Adebisi, 25; Joseph Adebisi, 22 and Sheu Usman, 25, all residents of Aiyetoro area, Ilorin, were on Wednesday remanded in prison custody for stabbing Leke Awodo, 31, to death.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused allegedly killed the deceased on January 13 following an argument over the removal of fuel subsidy.

The accused were arraigned before Magistrate Mulikat Akorede on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt and culpable homicide.

The charge sheet said Joel Awodo of Ile-Anu Street, off Asa-Dam road, Ilorin, reported at the Police ‘D’ Division that his son was stabbed to death.

It said preliminary police investigation by detectives indicated that the accused engaged in a serious argument with the deceased and his group over fuel subsidy removal in a state of intoxication after taking alcohol.

The charge sheet also said that the accused stabbed Samuel Oladimeji in the back during the argument.

The police prosecutor, Godwin Asua, told the court that investigation was still ongoing and objected to the granting of bail to the accused persons.

But the counsel to the accused persons, Mr. Abdulsamad Lawal, prayed the court to admit his clients to bail pending their trial.

He argued that the 1999 constitution presumed an accused person innocent until proven otherwise.

The magistrate acceded to the submission of the prosecutor and remanded the accused in prison custody while adjourning the case to Feb. 13.
