Nigerian Varsities Bubble Again
The hitherto deserted campuses of government-owned universities, are once again lively with activities following the decision of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call of the strike it embarked upon last year.
Though lectures have not really fully commenced in most of the institutions, the students, who were apparently tired of staying at home have resumed in large numbers, and the campuses have come alive.
Campus Square gathered that since the suspension of the strike was announced, the excited students had started celebrating it in clubs and bars. When most of them eventually met on the campus, the celebration continued.
Some of them who spoke with Campus Square described their experience during the strike as boring and frustrating, and urged government to prevent such in future.
“My brother, it wasn’t easy at all. Firstly, we had to remain at home for a long time without doing anything reasonable. Secondly, most of us were broke because the usual financial tips we get from our parents and uncles were not coming anymore. It was so frustrating,” a student who does not want his name in print said.
At the Lagos State University, students were seen moving around in their respective departments, while it is business as usual at the ever busy University of Lagos. The hostels have been reopened and students were seen moving in with their luggages.
The ASUU strike was suspended last week after series of closed door meetings betwee representatives of the Federal Government and the union.
