Two Charged With Assaulting Police Officer

The police at Ilasan Division, Jakande Estate, Lekki, Eti Osa, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, have arraigned two persons before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on a two-count charge of conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace and assaulting the Divisional Crime Officer of Ilasan Police Division in the process.

The police alleged that the accused, Rafiu Mustapha, 30, and Falilatu Babo, 35, were arrested after they assaulted the Divisional Crime Officer of Ilasan Police Division, Warrant Assistant Superintendent of Police Adeola Yaya and her men while performing their lawful duties.

The charge stated that the DCO on 30 January 2012 at about 11:30 hours led her men to Ajiran area of Lekki to effect the arrest of Alaba Mustapha who allegedly committed an assault, occasioning bodily harm.

But the accused person and others now at large allegedly assaulted the DCO and her men, and prevented them from arresting Alaba Mustapha.

The offences, the prosecutor, Inspector Nkem Uko, said are punishable under Section 44 (1) and 172 (b) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges when it was read to them and the presiding magistrate, Mrs. O.A Ogunbowale, granted them bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum who must be blood relations with proof of two years tax payment to the Lagos State government.

She adjourned the matter to 14 February, 2012 for mention.

The accused persons were moved to Ikoyi and Kirikiri Prisons when they could not perfect their bail conditions in good time.
