Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State today gave 100 hectares of land situated at Iwo Farm Settlement to 20 large scale farmers for cultivation.

Each farmer was given five hectares of land to plant arable crops.

According to a release from the Osun governor’s office and signed by a top media aide, Gbenga Fayemiwo, Aregbesola explained that his administration realised the danger inherent in massive food importation and decided to take proactive steps to reverse the trend.

According to him, nature had blessed the Osun State with fertile land which could transform the nation from an importing one to mass food exporter.

He observed that Nigeria’s security could be in trouble if the conditions that gave rise to food importation were not addressed saying “we have so much land and we are importing food. Are we not in trouble? That is why we are putting in everything to the food security programme.”

Aregbesola also described his quest for power as a mission that was underlined by the determination to serve humanity and reverse the decline that was setting into the public life of Osun State.

He recalled that his ascendancy to power was tough and discouraging but he remained undaunted that having won the 2007 election in Osun State, his stolen mandate would be restored lawfully.
In 2005, he narrated his encounter with former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola who he reported asked him to explain where he was in Lagos State when he was serving as Military Administrator.
His reply according to the statement was that he was nowhere but happy to note that God used him to replace Oyinlola in office.

“In 2005, I went to Abuja. I had made my appearance known at that time and there was already a great shaking on the political landscape. Oyinlola lodged in the same hotel with me. He invited me into his room. He asked me where I was when he was governing Lagos and I replied that I was nowhere. If I who was nowhere before had the opportunity of taking power from him, only God deserves praises for this”.

The governor added that he had never disclosed this encounter publicly and wondered how God intervened to restore his stolen mandate.

According to him, his administration had relied on the power of God to carry out all his huge programmes through till date.

He announced that his administration had spent a total of N102 million on land clearing, demarcation and provision of other infrastructure to the farmers so that they could move into the site and begin work immediately.

Aregbesola then directed that the farmers who were given the allocation free of charge should plant on their allotted site within the next 90 days or risk the loss of their allocation.
