Police job Most Hated On Earth —New DIG
The commissioner of Police for Benue State, Mr. John Haruna, has described police job as the most hated occupation on earth, saying it was a job people hardly appreciate because of the appalling attitudes of police personnel, according to Daily Trust online.
Addressing officers of the Gboko Area Command in Gboko Local Government Area yesterday, Haruna, who has just been promoted Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG, said some policemen have imbibed the habit of threatening motorists at checkpoints with guns while conducting search.
He said that action alone, has ridiculed the police force.
He added that officers’ appearance coupled with indiscipline have also pitched the public against the force and called for a change of attitude to regain the lost glory of the police force.
“In some cases, policemen on stop-and-search patrol have resorted to collecting N20 from motorists in the full glare of passengers,” he said.
He appealed to the disciplined ones in the force to expose officers and men that encourage corrupt tendencies.
Haruna also called on the area commanders and the divisional police officers to monitor their subordinates so as to correct the bad impressions.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command said yesterday that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Pen Cinema Division, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Segun Olubumi, who was arrested for allegedly killing a protester during the anti-fuel subsidy removal in Lagos, was still in custody facing trial, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operation, Tunde Shobulo has said.
He said the police officer was being held at the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) from where his trial would begin.
He spoke in reaction to insinuations that the DPO had been posted out of Lagos.
He also confirmed the arrest of the factional leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) over his alleged involvement in the Monday mayhem in Isale Eko area of the metropolis.
