Army Begins Audit Of Retired Soldiers

The Military Pensions Board has commenced the verification of retired soldiers in Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.

The audit exercise which started at Ikeja Military Cantonment on Monday will end on Thursday, 13 March, 2012.

At the commencement of the auditing, retired soldiers in Lagos State in their thousands trooped to the Ikeja Cantonment to be counted.

The exercise was coordinated by Group Captain T. Oladega and Wing Commander D. N. Nwachukwu from the Military Pensions Board, Abuja. The coordinators said arrangements had been put in place to ensure quick and smooth auditing of retired soldiers in Lagos State.

According to Group Captain Oladele, soldiers have been grouped according to their ranks. Private and Lance Corporals were the first to be audited while the fourth to sixth day of the exercise will be for sergeants and other NCO’s to be verified. Later, commissioned officers will be audited.

Commenting on the exercise, the Deputy Commandant-General and Chairman, Lagos State Council of Nigeria Legion, Colonel Femi Oguntade (retd.) commended the MPB for organising the auditing.

Oguntade also called on President Goodluck Jonathan to pay military pensioners the six years arrears owed them since former President Obasanjo was in office.

He said retired soldiers would be eternally grateful to Jonathan if he could pay them the pension arrears.

About a thousand retired soldiers were registered during the first day of the exercise.
