Students in Lagos State have rated high the Monthly Saturday Boxing Show held last Saturday at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Lagos.

The monthly event, which has tilted in favour of the development of school children in the give and take sport, is packaged by the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame, LBHF, in conjunction with the Lagos Amateur Boxing Association, LABA.

The students, who were among the teeming spectators that cheered the young boxers as they traded punches, said that the monthly show is an avenue for them to socialise with their mates from other schools.

Wuraola Balogun, an SS1 student of Nigeria Model High School, said that the event has made her to realise for the first time that education is beyond the four walls of the classroom.

“I will go to any lengths to see more of this show. I had always thought that education is all about students sitting in the classroom but this show has made me realise that sports is another vital aspect of education,” Wuraola said.

For Ejem Chukwuemeka, a JSS3 student of Aje Comprehensive Junior School, the show is an avenue for young people to maximise their talents through sports.

“I feel excited watching young boxers like me trading punches in the ring. I am surprised to see my school mates displaying abundant skills in boxing. This show has no doubt aroused my interest in sports,” declared Chukwuemeka.

“I enjoy this show because it is very exhilarating,” said Michael Shoremikun, an SS2 student of Ilupeju Senior Grammar School. “I used to think that boxing was a dangerous sport because of the way boxers exchange punches. But this show has made me realise that boxing is the same as other sports,” he said.

Adelabu Ibrahim, an SS3 student of Ejigbo Senior High School, said the boxing tourney is a way of reminding the young students that they have a role to play in the society.

“I will cherish this experience for a very long time because this is the first time I am attending a boxing show. Besides, it makes young students like me realise that we also have a role to play in the society,” said Ibrahim.

Lami Atul, a JSS2 student of Aje Comprehensive Junior School, wished she was among the students that were trading punches in the ring.

“I feel great for having the opportunity to attend this show. It is very good for students. I wish that I was among the young boxers fighting in the ring,” she said.

Atul, however, appealed to her fellow students not to misuse the opportunity by indulging in vices.

“I want to appeal to the students not to misuse this opportunity by going into drugs. I think both the organisers and the school authorities need to monitor them properly,” added Atul.

Unamba Augustina, an SS3 student of Ilupeju Senior Grammar School, appealed to government to encourage boxing tourneys as a way of keeping students busy outside the school premises.

“This show is entertaining and it keeps us busy in spite of the fact that we are not in the classroom. Education is not all about reading and writing alone, if we have to consider the saying that ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’,” said Augustina.

“I have just discovered that boxing is both informative and educating,” said Abass Abiodun, an SS1 student of Nigeria Model High School. “I have learn a lot about boxing through this programme. The monthly event will help those that want to choose boxing as a career,” said Abiodun.

Adijat Ali, an SS3 student of Ejigbo Senior High School, said she was happy being given the opportunity to be among the few students from her school to witness the show.

“I am happy to be here today. In fact, I consider it as a privilege to be among the students that were chosen to represent my school. I see this show as another form of relaxation because I am really catching fun,” said Adijat.

Peter Omotoso, an SS3 student of Ilupeju Senior Grammar School, poured encomium on the organisers of the show, saying they have done a lot in educating the students.

“The organisers of this boxing show have done a lot to help us today. Most of us used to think that boxing is all about fighting but we have now realised that there is nothing malicious about boxing because it is just like any other sport,” Omotoso said.

Gift Effiong, a JSS3 student of Aje Comprehensive Junior School, appealed to the organisers of the event to stage subsequent editions within schools premises with the aim of wooing more students to the sport.

“I only discovered today that boxing is very interesting. But the organisers of this programme need to stage more of this show in the school premises. That is how they can encourage more students to pick interest in the sport,” said Effiong.
