FRSC Suspends Licence, Number Plate Renewal

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has suspended the mandatory renewal of drivers’ licences and vehicle number plates in Enugu following an order by the National Assembly, an official has said.

The announcement came as motorists in Enugu State commend the National Assembly for intervening in the forced renewal of the licences and number plates.

The Sector Commander of the corps in Enugu, Mr. Funmibi Olawoyin, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Monday that it had suspended the issuance of the two documents till further notice.

The motorists, who hailed the assembly for suspending the renewal, said the decision was in order.

A NAN correspondent who sought the opinion of the motorists, reports that they described the lawmakers as true representatives of the people.

According to the motorists, Nigerians are facing too many challenges to sustain their families, and rather than cushion the effect of the hard times; the commission increased their suffering through the exercise.

Mr. Onyekwelu Nwankwo, a civil servant, said the renewal was uncalled for because there were many security measures put in place by the three tiers of government to recover stolen vehicles.

“If it is for security reasons, why was the fee for renewal increased from N5,000 to N10,000 and likewise the cost of the number plates,” he queried.

Mr. Kenechi Onyema, a commercial driver, urged the lawmakers to ensure the total suspension of the exercise, describing it as a fraud by the agency.

According to him, the exercise is ill-timed as the nation is facing many challenges, especially in road accidents.

“The FRSC should strive to reduce the carnage on the highways, enforce good driving culture and other measures that would guarantee safety on the roads,” Onyema said.

Mrs. Edith Udeh, another respondent, said that if the exercise must continue, the FRSC should allow drivers to process the new licence when the old one expired while the change of number plate should be done at a reduced cost.
