Inter-House Sports: Emerald Win At Monidams Schools

Emerald house emerged winners of the inaugural Inter-House sports competition of Monidams Schools, Itoki Branch, on Saturday, 3 March, 2012 at the Itoki Community High School, Itoki, Ifo, Ogun State.

 

The Green House students representing Emerald beat Daisy (Yellow House) and Saphire (Blue House) to second and third places respectively, while Carnation (Red House) was at a distant fourth position.

 

The one-day school sports competion, which was well attended by parents of students of the school, was full of fun and exciting activities, ranging from track to field events and other side attractions for the parents, teachers and old students of Monidams schools.

 

Activities for the day commenced at 11am with an opening prayers from Mrs Nwachukwu, one of the students’parents, closely followed by a speech from the chairman of the ocassion, Surveyor Festus Ogunleye.

 

In his speech, the chairman of the occasion, who was represented at the event, admonished parents on the importance of sports and the need for them to encourage their wards to realise their sporting potentials.

 

He, however, implored the students not to let their involvement in sports activities affect academics pursuit,making reference to sports legends, Socrates of Brazil and Sam Okwaraji of Nigeria, who achieved great things in both sports and academics.

 

Director of the school, Mr Isaac Egbetayo, said the objective of the championship was to integrate healthy lifestyle into the school curriculum.

 

“We’ve improved the curriculum to ensure that every child participates in sports. We believe that their future depends on it; not necessarily in terms of sports but also in terms of being healthy,” Egbetayo said.

 

Egbetayo added that the turnout of parents at the tourney was impressive, saying their moral and financial support have been helpful in making the day a success.

 

Green House finished with 19 gold medals, while Yellow House finished in no distant second with 16 gold medals.

 

Events that were featured at the competition include 25km race for KG pupils, 50km and 75m races for primary students and 100m, 200m, 4x100m races for the junior and senior secondary school students. The highlight of the day was when Barachel Model Schools, Agbado, won the invitational relay race for male students.
