Fuel Subsidy Protest: Inquest Begins Into Death Of Youth

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court will tomorrow begin a coroner’s inquest into the death of a youth, Ademola Aderinto, allegedly killed by Pen Cinema, Agege DPO, Segun Fabunmi.

The Lagos State Coroner, Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias, revealed this in a summons made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

A divisional police officer allegedly shot Aderinto dead in Ogba area of Lagos on January 9, the first day of the January nationwide protest against removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

NAN reports that the inquest is at the instance of a human rights group, Access to Justice (AJ) and the Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association.

Mr. Joseph Otteh, Executive Director of AJ, told NAN that the purpose of the inquest was to ensure that the family of the slain youth got justice.

“We want to establish the facts about the killing and know how to take the necessary legal steps to get justice for the deceased’s family,” Otteh said.
