Zenith Premier League: Deepwater Defeat First Bank


Defending champions of the Zenith Bank Premier League, First Deepwater of Lagos over the weekend continued their impressive defence of their domestic league title as they defeated former champions, First Bank of Lagos, by 88-81 points in Kaduna.

The ‘Oil and Gas Girls,’ as the Lateef Erinfolami-tutored side are popularly called by their fans, defeated FCT Queens in their first match at the ongoing first phase of the 2011/2012 season to show their resolve of not ready to relinquish the title they won for the second year successively.

After the match, an elated Erinfolami said their ambition this year is to retain the trophy won last year, stressing that their victory over First Bank, coached by Aderemi Adewunmi, will spur them to greater heights in their remaining matches in Kaduna.

Reacting to the defeat his team suffered in the hands of Deepwater, which they defeated twice at the recently concluded African Club Championship in Lagos, Adewunmi said: “We lost the match due to the inexperience of my girls. We lost some of quality players to other clubs and a couple of them are now nursing mothers.”

Nine teams that include, Plateau Rocks, Delta Force, Customs, Sunshine Angels, Dolphins, First Deepwater, First Bank and FCT Queens will campaign in the first phase of the league, currently holding in Kaduna from 15 to 29 March.

The second phase of the league has been scheduled to hold in Asaba from 21 April to 2 May, while the grand finale will hold inside the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium Surulere, Lagos, from 6-17 June, 2012.
