Corps Parades 87 Fake NYSC Members
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Wednesday in Abuja paraded 87 persons for falsely presenting themselves as members of the NYSC
The Deputy Commandant-General (DCG) of NSCDC in Nasarawa State, Mr. Walter Akubuiroh said they were arrested in Nasarawa on Tuesday based on intelligence reports.
“Due to the security situation in the country, our officers have been keeping surveillance and any abnormality noticed will be immediately investigated, and this arrest is the result of that surveillance,” Akubuiroh said.
The DCG said that some of the suspects escaped during the raid, but that the command was making efforts to arrest them.
He said that most of them were young people, desperate graduates, who for various reasons could not go for the national service and were lured into the illegality by a cartel.
Akubuiroh said that the suspects, aged between 20 and 30 years, were first camped somewhere in Nyanya in the FCT.
He said that they were later moved to Toto in Nasarawa State, where they were given kits and call-up letters.
They were also training regularly and waiting for deployment letters for their primary assignments.
One of the suspects, Uchenna Madu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that she was convinced that she could be given the opportunity to serve after two years of graduating with no hope of being called up.
Madu, who claimed she was a graduate of Science Laboratory Technology from the University of Jos, said she was asked to pay N80,000, but that she made initial deposit of N50,000.
She said her brother, who raised the money promised to pay the balance of N30,000 after she passed out from the “orientation camp.”
She said she was, however, suspicious when she noticed that the place they were camped was not a regular camp, and so she called her brother to come and pick her up.
The 26-year old lady claimed they were moved in buses on Sunday to a different location that she was not familiar with.
She also said that none of the supposed officials could tell her the location to enable her inform her brother of her whereabouts.
Madu claimed that it was there at the Guest house that they were rounded up by officers of the NSCDC on Tuesday.
