Billy Tanni is the Chief Coach of Ikorodu West Football Team that defeated Ajeromi/Ifelodun Council Football Team 6-5 via penalty shootout after one goal apiece in regulation time of the final of Lagos Speaker’s Cup, played recently at the Agege Stadium. After the match, Tanni spoke with Grassroots Soccer Guide about about his team’s success
How do you feel about your team’s victory over Ajeromi\ Ifelodun Council team?
It was a sweet victory for us. Our opponents gave us a good fight by getting their equaliser at the last minute of the game, but I thank God that we came out victorious.
Were you under pressure when they got their equaliser ?
I was a little bit jittery because I did not expect the match to end with penalty shootouts.
How would you rate your team’s performance throughout the tournament?
My team really gave a good account of themselves. We did not lose a match in the tournament. So I want to commend our players for their doggedness and commitment exhibited throughout the tournament.
Are you implying that your team deserved to win the tournament?
Of course, we deserved to lift the trophy. We worked hard to achieve our goal. We are planning to defend our title in the next edition.
How would you rate this year’s Speaker’s Cup?
It was better organised than the previous editions. We had a fair officiating and the standard of participating teams was impressive. I give this year’s edition a pass mark.
