'Mass Literacy Must Be Encouraged'

Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Wahab Alawiye-King, has vowed to ensure that the mass literacy initiative of the state government does not die.

Alawiye-King, who led the committee members on oversight function to ministries, departments and agencies, including the Mass Education Agency in Alausa Secretariat, as part of the committee’s oversight function, also promised that the state House of Assembly would assist the agency to meet the desired goal.

He further tasked the management and staff of the agency to embark on massive enlightenment campaign to enlarge the scope of the agency and solve the problem of truancy among adult students under their tutelage.

He asked the agency to submit the list of its 134 centres across the state with the names of officers in charge of each centre.

Mufutau Egberongbe, a member of the committee, advised that a meeting between the agency, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Local Government Chairmen and the Heads of Agriculture and Education in all the Local Government and Local Council Development Areas be facilitated, stressing that the move would spur the agency to perform better.

Earlier, Director, Mass Education of the agency, Mrs. Amore Adefolahan Olufemi, informed the committee that her collaboration with the Local Government Councils has helped the literacy level of the state which she put at 87 per cent.

Mrs. Olufemi said the agency has four vocational centres where students of the mass literacy programme learn other trades.
