Sports Festival: Lagos Brings Back Scrabble

There are strong indications that scrabble will feature in the National Sports Festival, which will be hosted by Lagos State later this year.

Scrabble was left out of the last festival in Rivers State, but the Local Organising Committee, LOC, of the Eko 2012 Games headed by Deputy Governor Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire said that the sport will be contested for in the fiesta this year.

General Secretary of Nigeria Scrabble Federation, NSF, James Eakyns, told P.M Sports, yesterday at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos that the re-introduction of scrabble in the 2012 Sports Festival is a welcome development, noting that the withdrawal of the sport from the last edition had nothing to do with the popularity of scrabble in the country.

He said: “The exclusion of scrabble at the Garden Games in Port Harcourt was owing to the fact that the host state, Rivers, felt that they had no medal prospects in the sport hence their decision to exclude scrabble.”

Eakyns said such decision really killed the morale of many states’ players that had prepared for the festival. He commended Lagos for taking the bold step to re-introduce scrabble in the 2012 National Sports Festival.
