Maritime Cup Kicks Off With Fanfare

The 4th Ships & Ports Soccer Challenge, Maritime Cup 2012 kicked off this week amidst funfare and colourful parade by the participating teams at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos .

At the opening ceremony, Chief Executive Officer of Ships & Ports Communication Company, organisers of the competition, Bolaji Akinola, said that the tourney, apart from being a recreational platform for operators in the Nigerian maritime industry, it has become an avenue where operators now meet for business transactions.

The large number of maritime stakeholders who attended the event took turns to commend the effort of the organisers to come up with what they described as a noble idea.

They noted that this year’s competition is an improvement with the participation of 16 teams/companies.

Some of the stakeholders who graced the occasion include, representative of the Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Mr. Uche Okorie, Founder and National President of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Dr. Boniface Aniebonam and Mr. Eugene Nweke respectively; Deputy Director, Public Relations, Mr. Ignatius Nweke; representative of Cotecna Destination Inspection Limited (CDIL), Mr. David Boudorin, Managing Director, Jafana Ventures, Alhaji Inua Mohammed and National President, Association of Registered Freight Forwarders (AREFF), Dr. Frank Ukor.

Meanwhile, the opening game saw the Nigerian Shippers’ Council beating APM Terminals Apapa Limited 1-0 while Sifax Group defeated Association of Registered Freight Forwarders (AREFF) 5-1 to win the second match.
