Mobile Court Convicts 92 Drivers

A mobile court on Thursday convicted 92 drivers for violating traffic offences on Lokoja-Abuja highway.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that their offences ranged from over-speeding to non-use of seat belts, overloading, lack of fire extinguishers and use of worn-out tyres.

They were asked to pay fines ranging from N2, 000 to N9, 000.

The offenders were apprehended by officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and arraigned before the court presided over by a magistrate, Mrs. Ojoma Omajali.

The FRSC team led by Mr. Benjamin Ifeakandu, Head of Operations in Kogi Sector Command, told NAN that his team monitored traffic situation on the road early on Thursday and discovered that many drivers violated rules with impunity.

Ifeakandu noted that many drivers and front-seat passengers disregarded seat belts, a practice which he said had contributed to fatalities during accidents.

NAN reports that the court will be in session till Friday.
