7 NURTW Members Imprisoned For Murder

An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday remanded seven members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in prison custody for the alleged murder of five men.

The defendants are Mustapha Adekunle, 36; Kunle Jayeoba, 39; Ismaila Abu, 40; Jamiu Enrinfolami, 34; Sunday Omole, 43; Tajudeen Saheed, 28; and Michael Kaizer, 46.

The defendants are standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, murder and intent to unlawfully kill.

Magistrate F. O. Davies-Abegunde remanded the defendants in prison custody and urged the prosecution to speed up the process of getting advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The prosecutor, DSP Victor Nwadike, told the court that the defendants committed the alleged offence between October 2005 and February 2012 in different areas of Lagos, namely Isale Eko, Ilupeju and Idumota.

Nwadike said that the defendants, being members of NURTW, conspired and shot dead five men with pump action guns.

He said that the men killed were Damola Dosumu, Shakirudeen Agbati, Demola Oladipo, Jamiu Adebara and Abduwahab Hassan.

He said that Dosumu and Agbati were shot and killed on January 31 at Isale Eko, while Adebara and Hassan were killed at Ilupeju on February 19.

He said that Oladipo, on the other hand, was killed at Idumota on October 26, 2005.

Nwadike brought an application for remand of the defendants in prison custody, pending the advice of the DPP, under section 264 (1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.

Magistrate Davies-Abegunde, however, remanded them in prison custody, urging the prosecution to speed up proceedings at the DPP‘s office.

“In view of sections 115 and 264 (1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, the defendants shall be remanded in prison custody, pending the advice of the DPP,” she said.

She adjourned the case till May 10 for mention.
