Pacific Championship For MorningStar Course

The Morningstar Golf Course in Parksville will host the CN Future Links Pacific Championship from 11-13 May to kick off the six-leg series for the first time since 2009, Canada Golf has announced.

The Pacific Championship travels to a different course each year on the Island or Lower Mainland. The tournament will feature some of Canada’s top golfers between the ages of 11 and 18 over three rounds.

Morningstar’s history as a national level course made it an easy selection as this year’s host.

“This will be the third national event they have hosted for us as well as a number of BCGA events and Canadian Tour qualifying,” said Canada Golf tournament director Cam Crawford. “It’s a great golf course and it has a good volunteer base as well.”

The top six finishers in the boys’ division from each of the CN Future Links tournaments, including the Prairies, Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic and Western Championships, will gain entry into the 2012 Canadian Junior Boys Championship at the Osprey Ridge Golf Club from 31 July – 3 August.

Meanwhile, the girls’ champion from each event will earn an exemption into the 2012 Royal Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship in Calgary and also get a spot in the 2012 CN Canadian Women’s Tour event.

Golfers have to apply for entry into the event and the field will be selected based upon a player’s history and exemptions – the field will consist of 72 boys and 27 girls. Each golfer is only permitted to play in a maximum of two events. The closing date for the Pacific Championship is April 18.

Crawford says Morningstar offers a challenge for all golfers especially the junior age group. “They get tested with every shot with every club in the bag,” he said. “It’s got a traditional Parkland layout, it’s got forced carries, it’s got forced lay ups, it really makes the juniors . . . think the golf course. They really have to manage their shot all the way around.”
