Most of the time, all you need to maintain a beautiful skin is a good moisturiser and a mild cleanser.

Whether your skin is dry, normal, or even oily, moisturisers will give you some of the protection you need to keep your skin from prematurely aging.

Dermatologists describe a “good” moisturiser as a product that will do anything from gently adding moisture, to sealing in the moisture you’ve achieved, to helping your skin produce more moisture. The type you choose should be based on your skin type.

If your skin is normal to dry, look for moisturizers containing alpha hydroxy acids. They can help skin produce more moisture on its own. And if it is oily, look for a light, gentle moisturiser.

Cleansing Strategy

Facial cleanser is an ideal beauty care product for most women but dermatologists warn against over cleansing. Not only do you need to buy the gentlest cleanser for your skin type, it is advisable to use it sparingly.

What is your skin type? Dry, oily, normal, sensitive or blemished skin type? Many beauty cabinets are full of cleansers, but are they really worth it? A good cleanser isn’t really about the brand. It shouldn’t be loaded with chemicals or perfumes that can irritate the skin. A soap-free, oil-free liquid lathers away dirt, makeup and oil but doesn’t leave skin so dry. A person with a dry skin can go for creamy cleanser but the less the chemicals used, the better it is for use.

Don’t be tempted to wash your face several times a day (or more even if your skin is oily). If you wash your face more than twice a day, according to dermatoligists, you can damage the natural lipid barrier, the protective mantle of lubrication that keeps your skin looking and feeling healthy.

It is worse when you use a harsh product, particularly soap. Once you damage your protective mantle, your skin becomes dry, which means it can crack, peel, itch, burn, sting, or any combination. It also means you can look older than your age.

The best bet is to avoid washing more than twice in a day and choose your cleanser wisely.

Splashing a bit of water on your face before cleaning or using a slightly wet cotton to wipe your face with the facial cleanser will maximise the effectiveness of cleansing. But do not use hot or cold water when cleaning your face. Instead, always wash with warm water.

You can also keep your skin healthy lookingwith natural facial cleansers.

Mix one tablespoon of lemon juice with two tablespoon plain yoghurt. Apply it on your face, leave it for 10 minutes and then rinse with warm water.
