Maritime Union Wants Crane Operators Trained
The President of Dockworkers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju has called on terminal operators to assist the union in training a new crop of crane operators.
Adeyanju lamented that the current set of crane operators are ageing, and if the situation is left unattended to, operations at the nation’s port will be affected in no distant time.
He made this call at a meeting of the branch leadership with members of the union recently in Lagos.
“We are particular about the training of crane operators. Because if you look at the whole terminal today, some of the crane operators are old and we are now saying that the terminal operators should assist by organising what we call train-the-trainer, by training all the crane operators because when somebody is old and cannot see very well this will cause accident at the port.
“On our own part we are telling the older ones to train the younger ones because they are already old. We need the terminal operators to support this idea by sending some of them for training but not just only the crane operator but the entire dockworkers because if you don’t train people they will remain where they are,” Adeyanju added.
Meanwhile Adeyanju called on dockworkers to desist from stealing at the various terminals.
He noted that the act of stealing is inimical to the overall image of the union.
