Robbers Kill Journalist In Nigerian City

Robbers have shot and killed Chucks Ogu, a cameraman with Independent Television (ITV), a privately-owned station based in Benin City, southsouth Nigeria.

Ogu was reportedly shot on Saturday night after covering a marriage ceremony at the home of a newly wedded couple along Siluko Road.

The gang suddenly stormed into the apartment of his colleague who had just wedded and opened fire, hitting Chucks. He died on the spot.

The colleague of the late cameraman who did not wan his name mentioned could neither confirm if Chucks was the actual target of the attack nor if anything was taken away from the couple by the attackers.

A member of staff of Independent Television who did not wish to be named confirmed the death of Chucks.

“It is true my brother. He was shot dead at the home of the new couple at Siluko Road after covering their wedding ceremony. He was there with his colleague to arrange when to air the programme when robbers suddenly appear and shot him. We deposited the remains of Chucks in the UBTH mortuary last night.”

According to him, “Chucks Ogu was a man of quiet and humble disposition and will be missed by all for his diligence and hard work.”

As at the time of filing this report, no official statement has been issued by authorities of Independent Television.

A reporter with Channels Television, Akogwu Enenche who began his career with Independent Television in Benin years back was brutally murdered by the dreaded Boko Haram sect while covering one of their numerous attacks in the city of Kano in January this year.

Edo police command image maker, Etim Bassey could not be reached for comment as calls made to his mobile phone went unanswered.
