The Federal Ministry of Works is to produce series of maps in 2013, aimed at promoting national development, the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Professor Peter Nwilo, has said.

Nwilo said this on Monday in Lagos this while responding to questions from newsmen at the ongoing meeting of the National Council on Works of the Federal Ministry of Works.

The edition has as its theme: “Reforming the Road Sector for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation.”

Nwilo said that the maps would give details of the environment.

“For development to take place, some basic infrastructure must be there; one of them is map at an adequate scale.

“When you are designing and building a road, those things must be there so that your partners will not say you should go and start producing maps.

“That is why the government is working very hard to ensure that by next year, we will start a new series of maps,” Nwilo said.

He noted that Lagos State had mapped at the most appropriate scale, and that has assisted in the development of the state.

“That is the kind of thing we are trying to do at the federal level. Other agencies or states should take a cue from what Lagos State Government has done,” he added.

He said that his office was working hard to capture the extent of the federal highways to ensure that people did not build on right of ways.

Nwilo said that the office would apply modern technology to facilitate the delineation, adding that the new technology would achieve better results cheaper and faster than the traditional method.

The six-day event is scheduled to end on April 20.
