Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, has increased the number of aged people in its ‘Feed the Elders’ programme to 1, 000.
The programme, according to the council boss, Adeyemi Alli, was aimed at giving succour to the aged in the area.
“We give out N5,000 to people of 65 years and above. This programme has been on since 2009 and 500 people have been benefiting since then. Now, we have increased the number of beneficiaries to 1, 000. Already, screening for new beneficiaries is going on at the council by a committee headed by the vice chairman, Rasak Ajala,” Alli said.
The chairman of the screening committee, Ajala explained that membership of the committee was drawn from outside the council to ensure that beneficiaries were chosen purely on merit.
“Apart from me, members of the committee include the representatives of the Muslim, Christian communities and the community development associations (CDAs),” Ajala said.
He explained that beneficiaries of the programme were expected to be residents of the area and must be 65 years and above.
“We have given out forms to prospective beneficiaries to fill and it is from the data they supplied that we will determine who is qualify or not,” the screening committee chairman said.
He disclosed further that beneficiaries will start collecting the money as soon as the screening is completed.
