Three out of the six local government chairmen invited by the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts over the report of the Auditor-General for Local Governments on capital projects inspection have refused to appear before the committee.

This annoyed the Chairman of the Committee, Saka Fafunmi, who vowed that such disregard for constituted authority would not be tolerated.

The affected local government areas include Agege, Bariga and Apapa.

Fafunmi has vowed to ensure that the council chairmen were sanctioned.

He said that the exercise was to consider the report of the Auditor-General for Local Governments on the capital projects inspection of local governments and local council development areas in the state.

Fafunmi noted that out of the six local governments invited to appear on the first day of the exercise, only Amuwo–Odofin and Apapa-Igunmu local government chairmen took permission not to appear while others refused to attend.

Only Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area appeared before the committee and was asked to re-present its necessary documents to justify the capital expenditure incurred during the period under review.

Fafumi also called on the council to give priority to provision of basic amenities for people of Ayobo-Ipaja.

He warned the LCDA against embarking on projects that would not be beneficial to the people of the area.

The committee frowned at a situation where only 20 percent of the capital expenditure of LGAs and LCDAs was targeted at meeting the needs of the people in the respective areas.

The exercise will end on 26 April, 2012.
