A businessman, Inuwa Abdurrahman of Tudun Wada area, Kaduna, was on Wednesday dragged by his former wife before a Kaduna Sharia Court over unpaid three-year rent.

The complainant, Fatima Kano, told the court that since their divorce in 2009, her former husband had not been paying the rent for the house she lived in with their two daughters.

Kano said Abdurrahman had also abandoned the children as he was not providing money for their feeding and other needs.

She urged the court to compel Abdulrahman to refund the three-year rent, the children’s feeding allowance and other expenses since their divorce in 2009.

In his defence, Abdurrahman, represented by his counsel, Awwal Abdullah, disagreed with Kano’s claims.

He said that he visited his daughters regularly in Kano and took care of their needs, adding that he also paid their school fees.

“What delayed remittance of the fees is that Fatima failed to disclose the school where the children are enrolled,” he further stated.

Abdurrahman argued that although the children were under Kano’s custody, it was not his responsibility to pay the rent of the house in which his former wife lived.

He said he had witnesses to testify that the feeding allowances of the children were being remitted to her.

The presiding judge, Ibrahim Inuwa, directed Abdurrahman to produce witnesses to prove his claims and adjourned the case to April 25.
