My Husband Says Our Child Is A Bastard —Petty Trader

A 30 year-old housewife and petty trader, Titilayo Olude, has asked a Mushin Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve her three year old marriage with Sulaimon, whom she claims, regards their child as a bastard.

“My husband has been telling everybody that our second child is a bastard.

“He rejected the child on the grounds that he wasn’t the one who impregnated me; this is very callous of him,” Titilayo told the court.

She had asked the court to dissolve her marriage with Sulaimon Olude because he disowned their second child and prevented her from seeing her first child for 10 months.

“I demand a DNA test to ascertain the paternity of the child: I am very sure the child belongs to him.”

Mrs Olude told the court that she was solely responsible for the welfare of the child for two years.

“I have been taking care of the child with proceeds from my petty trading.”

Responding, Sulaimon told the court that he was not interested in carrying out a DNA test.

He said that he had become convinced that the child belonged to him, having consulted with his family members.

Sulaimon, however, said that he was no longer interested in his marriage to Titilayo.

“I will take care of my two children. I am no longer in love with their mother.

“I desire a divorce more than she does. She is too troublesome and immature for my liking.”

The Court President, Dr Abayomi Ipaye, granted the couple’s plea for divorce since they both insisted on the dissolution of the marriage.

Ipaye, however, referred them to a Family Court, where the custody of the children would be determined.

He mandated Sulaimon to provide a sum of N10,000 as monthly allowance for their two children.
