‘Nigeria Has Failed To Provide Social Security’

The lawmaker representing Oshodi/Isolo Federal Constituency 01 in the House of Representatives, Moruf Akinderu Fatai, MAF, says that Nigeria as a nation has failed in the area of social security.

MAF, as he is called said this during his Elderly Support Programme held at Ikeja Secondary School, Oshodi, Lagos State, recently.

“Over the years, the problems faced by the aged population have not received the required attention in Nigeria. They are always at the receiving end of the socio-economic problems in Nigeria. They are supposed to be well taken care. The family and government have roles to play in ensuring that our aged ones are catered for. Government should improve on its service to the people. For instance, effective social security, basic infrastructure and employment opportunities for the youths among others, as it will improve their living condition.

“We recognise the care they receive from their extended family, but these are not enough because there are lots of needs to be met by each family. The cost of living and unemployment of our teeming youths do not help the situation. Our youths were sent to schools by these aged parents in order to secure their tomorrow. Unfortunately, they cannot get jobs after completing their studies.

“As a nation, we have failed in this area of social security for our elderly. Government can do a lot for them in the area of social amenities like good health facilities, monthly allowance and standard of living enhancement programmes. There should be an effective government old age security programme in Nigeria. Many are battling with eye problems as a result of exposure to hydrocarbons from the factory and strenuous works done at the earlier stage of their lives. Their pensions are not paid. Pensions funds are withheld and embezzled by wicked public officers,” MAF stated.

He called on the people and government to stand by the aged ones since we cannot afford to abandon them as we shall also get old one day. The lawmaker said they deserved to be shown love and care. “This informs our action to make available this stipend for them to meet some of their needs. We feel their pains and we identify with their plight. Their condition has forced me to give out of my resources to empower them. And I must also show my gratitude for their unflinching support during the election,” he stated.

MAF said he will not relent in his capacity as their representative in the formulation of policies that will help minimise the hardship experienced by the aged in the society.

He also intends to call on government to enhance the pension scheme and the retirement benefits to positively improve the well-being of the elderly in the society.
