Elegushi Tug-Of-War Tourney Begins Today

The First Oba Yekini Adeniyi Elegushi Tug of War Beach championship begins this afternoon, at the Elegushi Beach in Eti Osa Local government area of Lagos State, Nigeria.

Ten states are expected to take part in the two days tourney that will end on Saturday. Edo, Akwa Ibom, Kaduna, Plateau are among the states featuring in the event. Apart from state contingents, teams from the Nigeria Police, LAGBUS and some private clubs will also participate in the tournament.

In a press briefing held at the Elegushi Palace, Ikate, Eti-Osa, President of the Tug of War Nigeria Federation, Anthony Oyetayo said the championship was an initiative of the Tug of War Federation, which was aimed at immortalising the late royal father, Oba Yekini Adeniyi Elegushi, whose contributions to humanity were monumental.

“He was a man who touched many lives and affected his community positively, while his reign lasted,” Oyetayo said, adding that the late Oba’s magnanimity was worthy of emulation.

The federation president also heaped praises on the Elegushi royalty for endorsing the idea of holding a competition in honour of the departed Oba. “I must also mention the enormous goodwill and support we have received from Oba Saheed Elegushi, who has supported us at every stage of the planning and has continued to assist morally and financially.”

He promised a lot of side attraction by the numerous sponsors who have planned for an unforgettable experience for all lovers of the sport.

Speaking on the benefits of championships, Oyetayo said, “it will enhance the visibility of the sport and re-enforce the passion followers of the game,” he said.
