Adegoke Upsets Akewula At CBN Open

Non-seeded female tennis player, Sarah Adegoke, created an upset at the ongoing Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Tennis Open after defeating number 2 seeded player, Abiola Akewula, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

The match, decided at the tennis court of the National Stadium, Surulere in Lagos, started as a convincing one for the winner. But her more fancied opponent turned the table in the second set only for Adegoke to rally back into the game in style by winning the third set outrightly.

An elated Adegoke said she achieved the feat only with hard work and perseverance.

“I knew that I would achieve something good and I was made to work for this achievement. I think my perseverance and hard work are beginning to pay off now. I also thank God for making it possible for me,” she said.

Meanwhile, the defending champion of the men’s singles, Henry Atseye, continued with his impressive run in the tournament as he defeated Christian Paul, 6-3, 7-6 (7) in the second round.

Atseye who was a pre tournament favourite had begun his title defense by defeating Afeez Razak 6-2, 6-2 in the first round and sure looks to consolidate on his tag as the defending champ.

The tournament will end 12 May,2012.
