Fashola Tasks Nigerians On Democracy

Governor Babatunde Fashola of LagosState has urged Nigerians to jealously guard the country’s democracy and ensure that its success is not undermined.

He made the call in Lagos on Thursday, while speaking a forum on “Nigeria in the New Age: Redefinining the Parameters for the Social Contract.”

Describing democracy as the best form of government, Fashola said that in spite of the many challenges, democracy remained the only model of government that could guarantee the people’s rights and propel development.

He stressed that military rule was an aberration, adding that it hindered development and suppressed the fundamental rights of the citizens.

“Democracy is still the best form of government; it guarantees individual rights and reflects the will of the people.

“It is a form a government that does not encroach on the people’s freedom; instead, it offers a platform for development. We should be committed to it; we should strive to ensure its success,” he said.

Fashola urged government at all levels to evolve policies that would transform the people’s lives, saying this would help in building the people’s confidence in the democratic process.

He noted that democracy had made some steady progress in the last 13 years and called on the citizens to strive harder to make it better.

Earlier, Prof. Anya Anya, who chaired the forum, said that Nigeria, with an annual growth rate of seven per cent, had the potential to become an economic giant if she had purposeful leaders.

He urged the citizens to remain committed to the dream of a new Nigeria, while making the necessary efforts to turn the dream into a reality.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the forum was organised by Business Hallmark newspaper.
