LG Election: Angry Youths Destroy Senator's Office

Hundreds of protesting youths on Monday afternoon swooped on the office of the Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Senator Gbenga Obadara along Nawair-ud-deen road, Isabo, Abeokuta and destroyed items worth millions of naira.

The irate youths were protesting an alleged imposition of a candidate on them for the forthcoming local government election by the state Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

Our correspondent also gathered that the youths went to the family house of the Senator at Oke Aregba in Abeokuta where they told his mother to warn him against his perceived plan to field an unpopular candidate for the local government election.

P.M.NEWS gathered from a reliable source that the governor held a meeting with the leaders of the party from the area at the Valley View Hall of the Government House in Ibara where he allegedly told the leaders to support his intention to field a particular aspirant contrary to the zoning arrangement put in place by the elders of the council in 1987 which had been religiously observed by all political parties.

The protesters who carried placards with various inscription such as,”zoning is the answer in Odeda LG”,”Odeda says no to imposition of Chairman”, “Pls. Mr Governor,Elemide from Odeda wanted as Honourable,” “Obadara, Senator from Itesi ward,the same constituency, let Opeji constituency produce the Chairman”.

They accused the lawmaker of toeing the line of the governor to jettison the zoning arrangement in the local government.

Reacting to the incident, the lawmaker told our correspondent on phone that he was not a party to the jettisoning of the zoning arrangement.

there is no way that I would go against the system.I never had any meeting with the governor supporting an aspirant or on how to jettison the zoning arrangement.

“While pleading for understanding with the people, Obadara promised to ensure that the governor respects the wishes of the people.

During the recent tour of the governor to the local government, some angry youths staged a peaceful protest to the governor, warning that he should not interfere in the political arrangement of the local government which supports zoning of political offices in the area.

The action of the protesting youths which coincided with the Thank You visit of the governor to the local government, compounded the gridlock along the Abeokuta/ Ibadan road during the visit.

According to one of the protesters, “what we

heard then is what they carried out. We are not going to take that from the governor and if he insists, we will vote against the party during the local government elections. We have got wind of their plan and by God’s grace, if they insist, we have the power through our votes to decide what we want”, he stated.
