Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has conceded that Borussia Dortmund are currently the number one club in Germany.
Dortmund recorded a comprehensive 5-2 win over Bayern in Saturday’s DFB-Pokal final to complete the domestic double, after pipping their rivals to the Bundesliga title.
And despite Bayern being long regarded as the strongest German side, Rummenigge admits that is no longer the case.
“Borussia Dortmund reportedly won [the DFB-Pokal],” Rummenigge said. “We have to accept and respect that there is a team in this country that is better than us domestically at the moment.
“It’s not a coincidence that they have won the league title, and they have now won their first-ever double. We have to accept this and try to do our utmost to turn things around again in the near future.
“It’s not a coincidence if you lose 5-2. This was not a matter of bad luck, but we have to admit that it was an ignominy.”
Bayern have one final chance to get some silverware this season when they take on Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday.
